Chapter Eighteen

Brandon

Fortunately, Devin had decided to keep a suit at my apartment because he stayed with me for a few days. On Wednesday, he said the guys had given him too much grief for wearing the same suit three days in a row, so we decided to stay at Devin’s apartment for the rest of the week. We went to my place so I could get some clothes, and I packed quickly. On the way to his apartment, his phone rang. MOM popped up on the car’s display screen, along with a picture of a beautiful woman with red hair and a nose that looked just like Devin’s.

“You mind?” he asked.

I shook my head. “Go for it.”

He touched the screen to accept the call. “Hi, Mom, how’s it going?”

“Way-ull, hey there, baby cakes.”

Unprepared for the Southern drawl, I almost lost it.

With her next sentence, the accent was completely gone. “I’m fine, Dev. I haven’t heard from you for almost a week and wondered how things are going.”

“Things are great.” He glanced at me and grinned. “Never better.”

“That’s what I hoped.” I looked to the right in time to see the Japanese embassy go by, but her next words caught my attention. “Andie said Liam told her you’ve worn the same clothes to work three days in a row, so I assume you’ve been staying with that boy.”

I jerked my head around in time to see Devin’s face go puce. “Mom!” he said. “That’s none of your—”

“Andie said she’s met the boy, and he’s very handsome and nice.” The accent came back. “Son, it just dills my pickle that you’ve found someone, but I hope you’re being careful.” Her inflection of the last word left no doubt about what she meant.

“Mom!” Devin yelled. “That’s totally….” He glanced in my direction. “Mom, I’m in the car, and Brandon’s right here with me. He can hear every word you’re saying.”

“Brandon, that’s right! Hi, Brandon! I’m Lauren and it’s nice to meet you.” No more accent.

We were stopped at a light, and Devin shook his head and held out a hand in my direction. “Hi, Mrs. Macadam,” I said.

“Call me Lauren. We’re going to be good friends.” Devin put his hands over his face, and she kept right on going. “Although I have to tell you, you have your hands full with Devin. He can be a real trial.”

“Mom, please!” Devin’s plea was almost desperate, and as luck would have it, that was when traffic began moving again. His expression switched from horrified to amused. “Mom, you’re embarrassing me.”

“Brandon, you’re going to love Devin. Try to be patient with him, though. He’s not just my baby, he’s everybody’s baby.” She laughed hard. “I’m only kidding, Brandon. Devin’s a good boy, and I’m sure he must be an outstanding boyfriend.”

“Mom, I’m driving and we really have to—”

“Wait, Son. I’m coming down there.”

Devin went pale. “You are? When?”

“Friday.”

“Fuck!” Devin mouthed, slamming his fist into the steering wheel. I couldn’t help but laugh.

“What was that noise? Is everything all right?”

Devin blew out a big breath, puffing out his cheeks.
